How To Relax Into Your Eating & Lose Weight
I am sure everyone has heard that stress makes us fat – but do you actually know why? This is typically where people get stumped, so let me take a minute and explain one of the mind-body dimensions that everyone needs to know.
For the past decade of working with my clients and coaching them towards their individual fitness and nutrition goals, I have also been able to experience the beliefs that have influenced them along their journey. Whether it be their belief in food, fitness or even how they view others, these beliefs can be so strong that is causes their bodies to end up in a stressed response, and no matter how much hard work they put in from a diet and training perspective, their results will never be achieved.
Whatever is going on in your world directly influences your digestion. How you perceive yourself, directly influences your digestion. Happy, sad, stressed or angry, all these emotions will dictate your digestion.
To simplify this a bit more, lets use the example of food, since so many allow this to take over their thoughts and base success off what they eat, or better yet, don’t eat.
Think about how many times you walk into the lunchroom at work and see goodies sitting on the table for everyone to help themselves. Now, think about how the scenario plays out in your head when you notice these goodies? Probably something like this:
Oh wow, those look SO GOOD!
Too bad I’m on a diet (again) and can’t have any
Maybe I will just go and smell them
Well, maybe one won’t hurt!
I can’t, it’s bad food
It’ll make me fat
It’s not part of my diet, it’s a bad food
I can do this, just walk away
Oh screw it, I’m going to fail anyway!
Why do I always have to cave
I have no willpower
I am such a failure
I will start my diet again tomorrow, promise!
Sound familiar? This negative self talk is stressed eating, and therefore putting your body into a stressed response.
So, what happens when you put your body into a stressed response? Everything in your gut decreases. Cortisol goes up. Insulin goes up. Your digestion TURNS OFF, you start to store fat, gain weight, decrease muscle growth and find yourself depressed.
The mind is so powerful that even the healthiest of foods will affect you in the same way if you think in this state. Living in a stressed state can lead or contribute to every possible symptom, disease and food issue one has.
So, how do we fix this?
Learn to relax into your eating the same way you learn to relax into your body through yoga and meditation. This is something that takes time and practice but I can assure you that so many of your digestion and weight loss issues will go away. Anytime you are in a state of stress, no matter what it is, work, relationships etc, it doesn’t even have to be eating, you will hold/gain weight.
