Getting To Know Australian Coach, Sarah Angliss
“My love for fitness began at a young age, participating in many different sports at a recreational and competitive level. I studied Exercise Science at University followed by a post graduate degree in primary school teaching. After teaching for two years, at age 27, I decided to pack my bags and travel the world, with a 4 and a half year stop to the Cayman Islands where just like Nadine, I didn’t know a soul.”
Where do you reside?
What do you do?
I am currently a full-time primary school teacher, part-time personal trainer and online fitness coach.
I am engaged to be married (in September 2016) to my fiance, Vaughan. No kids as yet but definitely on the cards in the next few years. I have a twin sister Mel, and two older brothers Simon and Luke.
You are a free spirit and have never hesitated to pick up and go, where have you lived?
When I was 21 I lived in Canada (Banff) for 5 months during their winter season, this was in between living at Mt Buller doing winter seasons at home (3 hours from Melbourne). More recently I traveled to the Cayman Islands in the Caribbean, where I resided for four and a half years, then Lesotho and South Africa for 5 months before returning to Australia. During those 5 years of living abroad I also traveled extensively, visiting many countries including: Cuba, Jamaica, USA, France, Italy, England, Ireland, Scotland, Indonesia and Thailand. Last year I also went on a 3 week snowboarding trip to Japan (one more thing off the bucket list – p.s I literally have a bucket with writing on it) and a last minute trip to Bali for two weeks.
What got you into fitness?
As a kid and teenager I always loved sports. I played netball from a young age, participated in athletics, swimming and gymnastics. I played any sport I could at school and got into long distance running for fun. After high school I didn’t know what I wanted to do so I applied to study Exercise Science at university because the curriculum looked like fun! We participated in triathlons, gymnastics, basketball and learned the science of human movement. I joined the gym during this time to keep fit whilst studying and working part time. I always had a love of fitness and thrived on the energy and amazing feeling that working out gave me with such a busy lifestyle.
During university I began working at a surf and snowboard shop which is what began my love of snowboarding. After finishing university I decided that I needed a break from all of that study and therefore decided to move to Mt Buller to do as many winters as I could. I then taught gymnastics in primary schools when I decided it was time to get more serious about a career. I loved teaching the kids gymnastics but it became a bit repetitive so this then led me into becoming a primary school teacher.
While I loved teaching kids my love of health and fitness shone through and I felt the urge to share this love with others. So the next chapter began when I met Nadine Dumas in the Cayman Islands. After two years of primary school teaching I decided I wanted to travel the world. I met Nadine in 2010 when I saw one of her ads for her ‘What it Takes’ personal training and coaching services and I emailed her saying I would love to meet you and basically, let’s be friends (p.s or I could book you for a session if you’d prefer). Like a champ she emailed me saying let’s catch up for a coffee and a chat! This is where our friendship began. I was so enthralled in her life story and her fitness career that I decided to train with her but we also became the best of friends. She coached me through a fitness competition in Miami Florida, where I placed second. Thanks to Nadine my existing love of fitness excelled even more and a few years later (when I decided to move home closer to my family), we also decided this would be a great opportunity to expand her services to Australia together.
What is your main goal with your coaching services in Australia?
My main goal is to provide a more personal approach to online coaching to clients here in Australia. I currently train clients at a local gym (True Fitness, Braeside) and also train there myself, so for locals it’s good to put a face to a name (in person). Technology is pretty great these days and Skype/Zoom calls are helpful, but knowing I am on the same continent, shopping at the same grocery stores with all the same brands and foods – can be beneficial when you are eating clean. Being in the same time zone (it can get tricky with a 16 hour time difference!) means I can be on the same page and even meet in person if they would feel more comfortable.
What do you plan on doing with your coaching services there?
I plan to offer one-on-one online services including personalized nutrition and exercise training programs carefully planned to suit individual needs, designed with and under the guidance of Nadine. I will help clients through their program of choice whether it be helping them to fit it into their lifestyle, by providing accountability for their choices, supporting them to set and achieve realistic goals or simply being a person who will listen to the ups and downs throughout the whole process.
Have you ever competed in a fitness competition and how did you do?
In 2011 I competed in a fitness competition in Miami, USA and I placed 2nd. It was such an amazing experience! Before then I had obviously always exercised but didn’t necessarily focus enough on the nutrition side of things. I always felt pretty good (I knew I was no super model lol) but didn’t feel like I had much weight to lose. I had no idea of what my body could actually achieve until I trained with Nadine.
What is your motto?
Dream big and believe in yourself! Two of my favorite quotes are “She loved life and it loved her right back” and “What you think , you become……What you feel, you attract…….What you imagine, you create.”
What is your favorite cheat and clean foods?
I love Steak and sweet potato, sweet potato and more sweet potato!!!! I could seriously live off the stuff – I mostly love it cut into fries and sprinkled with rosemary and garlic. My favorite cheat meal always involves chocolate (I LOVE Lindt dark chocolate with mint or orange) actually pretty much all kinds of chocolate and ice cream (chocolate flavored!!!)
You are very well rounded when it comes to staying active and fit, what are some of your favorite sports?
I love snowboarding, stand up paddle-boarding and yoga. When we were in South Africa I placed third in a Quicksilver slope-style competition. I’m not going to lie this was a total shock, the jumps were big and I was pretty scared but I loved the adrenaline rush! Since living in Cayman I’ve loved practicing yoga. I think I was born doing a handstand but still working on my flexibility! Another thing I love to do is play on the trampoline….we are currently trying to buy a house and a prerequisite is to have a yard for an Olympic sized in-ground trampoline!
With your background as a teacher, lover of fitness and an active lifestyle etc, how do you plan to apply all of this to your coaching?
With my background as a teacher and being so active myself, I know what it’s like to have a busy lifestyle and I understand the importance of time management and a smooth transition when making lifestyle changes or adaptations. Starting a new fitness / nutrition regime or simply making a few changes to diet and fitness can be tricky even scary for most people.
I understand that individual needs can vary from person to person. Just like teaching a class of 28 children, we all start somewhere and learn at different rates, just like we all come from different backgrounds and have varying prior knowledge. I’m a people person as I am constantly providing feedback and support to people of all ages whilst being sensitive to their needs and differences. Helping people to make healthy changes and in a comfortable and supportive environment is really important for me as a coach. I am trustworthy and reliable and absolutely love helping others to make a difference. As I always say to my kids at school – there are no silly questions, I would never assume you know something and am therefore always there to help guide you every step of the way. Having completed a 12 week transformation myself, I understand the challenges and emotions from a participant/client point of view, I believe knowing what it’s like to go through it myself is comforting for any client.
Why did you choose to work under Nadine? What did you see in her coaching that intrigued you?
Put simply, she’s the best!!! Firstly, what kind of person actually responds to a random girl who emails her wanting to be friends because they have something in common and actually makes the time of day for her??? LOL
Nadine is an amazing coach and fitness role model. She practices what she preaches and is a genuine and inspiring person. She is understanding and promotes self belief. She helps people reach their goals in a friendly, encouraging and non-threatening way. Nadine has extensive knowledge and a huge presence in the health and fitness industry. She has over 10 years experience, many sponsors, she is an international fitness/swimsuit cover model, world-wide coach, accomplished entrepreneur and a mum! I wanted to learn from the best and she is definitely it.
Whats next for you?
I’m excited to continue on my journey of health and fitness and am really hoping to inspire as many others as I can along the way! This year is a big year for me, joining forces with Nadine is super exciting and also getting married and buying a house makes for some pretty exciting, but busy times. I can’t sit still for long so who knows what’s after that!!
